History of Clain Baird

Clan Baird is an ancient Scottish family whose early history is associated with Biggar and Cambusnethan in Lanarkshire. Over time, branches of the family spread northward into other parts of Scotland, including Aberdeenshire, Banffshire, and the lands associated with Ordinhivas and Auchmedden.

By the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries, the Bairds of Ordinhivas and Auchmedden had developed many of the characteristics traditionally associated with a Scottish clan. Historical records show that members of the family recognized a chief, held significant lands, maintained kinship ties, exercised local authority, and played an important role in the communities around them. The Lord Lyon also recognizes the Bairds as a clan.

The Bairds of Auchmedden became one of the most important branches of the family. Other lines developed at places including Newbyth, Saughtonhall, and Gartsherrie, carrying the Baird name into different regions of Scotland and eventually around the world.

Like many Scottish families, Clan Baird experienced a wide diaspora over the centuries. Today, large Baird populations can be found in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with descendants continuing to explore their genealogy and Scottish heritage.

Clan Baird Society Worldwide continues that legacy by connecting Baird families internationally, preserving clan history, supporting Scottish cultural and historical projects, and helping members discover their ancestral roots.
