About Braemar Stone

Braemar Stone is one of the classic tests of pure power in Scottish Heavy Athletics. Similar in principle to the modern shot put, athletes use a natural stone rather than a standardized metal shot. What makes Braemar distinctive is that the competitor must make the put from a stationary position—there is no run-up, glide, or spin to build momentum.

The stone is typically heavier than the one used for Open Stone, making technique, balance, and explosive strength especially important. From behind the trig, the athlete cradles the stone near the neck or shoulder and drives it outward with one hand, attempting to send it farther than the competition while remaining within the legal throwing area. Exact stone weights can vary by competition and division because natural stones are used.

For spectators, Braemar Stone offers a striking demonstration of controlled strength: there is little momentum to assist the athlete, so the distance comes from powerful leg drive, body positioning, timing, and sheer force.
