About Heavy Weight for Distance

Heavy Weight for Distance grew from Scotland’s centuries-old tradition of testing strength by lifting and throwing heavy objects. As Highland gatherings developed into organized athletic competitions, these feats of strength became standardized events. Today, competitors throw a heavy metal weight—traditionally 56 pounds in many men’s divisions—for the greatest possible distance. The event combines raw power with balance, speed, and precise timing, preserving one of the most recognizable tests of strength in Highland athletics.
