Before the first caber is turned, the first note is played, or the day’s competitions are fully underway, the Highland Games begin with a gathering.

For generations, Highland Games have brought people together to celebrate athletic skill, music, dance, family, heritage, and community. The Opening Ceremony serves as the ceremonial moment when those many parts of the Games come together — athletes, clans, musicians, performers, honored guests, and spectators entering the celebration as one community.

The sound of the pipes has become one of the most enduring symbols of the Highland Games, and processions of pipers, clans, and participants continue to mark the beginning of gatherings around the world. The ceremony is both a welcome and a declaration: the Games have begun.

Clan banners and tartans represent families and histories carried forward through generations. The athletes represent strength, skill, and friendly competition. Musicians and performers carry traditions through sound and movement. And the assembled crowd becomes part of the gathering simply by being there to witness and celebrate it.

At the Yosemite Celtic Festival, our Opening Ceremony continues that spirit. We gather the clans, athletes, Royal Court, pipers, performers, and festival community together to officially open the weekend — honoring the traditions that came before us while creating new memories and stories that will be carried forward.

It is more than the start of the schedule.

It is the moment we gather, and the Games begin.
