History of Clan Irwin Association

Clan Irwin Association represents a family heritage with deep roots in Scotland and the broader Scottish diaspora. The association notes that its members trace their roots to areas including the Scottish Borders, Royal Deeside, the Orkney Islands, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland. Over generations, descendants of the name spread across the world, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

One of the most important centers of the clan’s history is Drum Castle in Aberdeenshire. According to the association, the Royal Forest and Barony of Drum were granted to William de Irwyn by King Robert the Bruce in 1323, and for centuries Drum Castle was the seat of the chief of Clan Irvine.

Another important ancestral stronghold is Bonshaw Tower in Dumfries and Galloway. The association states that Bonshaw has been home to the Irvings since the 14th century and that the tower served as a refuge and power base for the family during the turbulent Border Reiver era. Bonshaw remains one of the best-known historic homes associated with the Irving branch of the family.

Today, Clan Irwin Association continues to preserve this heritage through genealogy, education, research, fellowship, and participation in Scottish cultural gatherings.
